Trump Urges Debate in Deadlocked Texas Senate Race

Texas’ U.S. Senate race is drawing attention as Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico face calls to debate. President Donald Trump urged Talarico to appear on a debate stage against Paxton, accusing him of being “missing in action.” Paxton has also gained support from some Texas Republicans who voted to impeach him in 2023, including state Rep. Matt Shaheen, who says he still stands by his impeachment vote while respecting voters’ choice of Paxton as the nominee. The contest is part of a broader wave of Senate debates seen as consequential to control of the chamber.
