Trump plans rare rally on Choctaw land
President Donald Trump is holding a campaign rally on Choctaw Nation land in Oklahoma as part of a push through Republican strongholds ahead of the midterm elections. The venue was chosen partly for its proximity to Texas, according to a Republican National Committee spokesperson; the Choctaw Nation is renting the site but says it is not sponsoring the event. Principal Chief Gary Batton said he hopes the visit will help people learn about the nation and its sovereignty. The rally is a rare visit by a sitting president to tribal land, where past presidential encounters have ranged from efforts to break up reservations and weaken tribal sovereignty to more recent acknowledgments of tribal autonomy.
