AI Executives Urge Slower Frontier Development

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a slower pace of frontier-AI development, arguing that safety research, oversight and alignment are not keeping up with rapidly advancing capabilities. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman endorsed the proposal and said OpenAI would give independent evaluators employee-like access to its systems, while xAI chief Elon Musk also expressed support. Amodei’s framework includes ongoing third-party assessments, shared safety standards among leading AI companies and greater international cooperation. The calls follow warnings that autonomous AI agents could conduct cyberattacks, improve themselves or cause large-scale disruption. Altman also said OpenAI would not pursue an IPO in 2026, citing the need for further progress on safety, monitoring, alignment and cooperation with governments, and said even a relatively small risk of catastrophic or existential harm should be treated as unacceptable.
