Trump and Tech Leaders Sign Morally Binding AI Safety Accord
President Donald Trump and CEOs from Google, Anthropic, Meta, xAI, and Nvidia signed the Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities on Sept. 29, 2026, after a White House lunch with more than 20 AI and tech executives. The accord commits firms to four layers of controls: internal monitoring on cybersecurity, biosecurity, and chemical threats; a dedicated internal team; independent external auditors; and an independent board committee. Trump posted the text on Truth Social, held an impromptu news conference outside the West Wing with the executives, and directed agencies to say super intelligence instead of artificial intelligence. He said self-regulation is much more important than existing Justice Department and FBI mechanisms, is considering a roughly 10-person industry review committee, and will soon name a new White House AI policy official. Nvidia's Jensen Huang said innovation, technology, and safety do not conflict. Anthropic's Dario Amodei said there are clear risks and that firms can be both competitive and safe if they respond appropriately. The document leaves open later codification into law; it does not specify enforcement, auditor standards, or penalties. Left-rated outlets led with self-policing without new rules; right-rated outlets led with a Super Intelligence safeguards accord. A Reuters/Ipsos poll from Sept. 17-20 found 73 percent worry AI companies have not done enough to prevent serious harm.
