SpaceX Unveils Starbase Louisiana Spaceport
SpaceX and Louisiana officials unveiled a $100 billion plan to build Starbase Louisiana, a 125,000-acre coastal spaceport on Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, intended to become SpaceX’s largest and main launch site. The project envisions five launch complexes with two pads each, plus on-site propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing, employee housing, and an airport, with construction slated to begin in 2027 and the first flight as early as 2029. State and local leaders tout job creation and regional economic development while stressing permitting timelines and interagency coordination, with some expecting major permits within six months. Environmental groups and local critics warn about potential long-term coastal and ecological impacts and call for transparent review, even as SpaceX promises shoreline restoration and marsh creation efforts. Analysts question the ultimate cost realization and the cadence versus the expansive land footprint, noting the ambitions surpass current launch activity and weigh against other capital needs at SpaceX, including AI initiatives. The plan would complement SpaceX’s existing sites in Texas, Florida, and California and align with broader Starship deployment goals.
