In-Laws Arrested in Fatal Dublin Shooting

Jonathan McKinsey, 40, an engineering director for The New York Times’ games division, was fatally shot in a Dublin, California, sports-complex parking lot on Sept. 26. Police arrested his in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, nearby on suspicion of murder, with witnesses helping officers locate them; authorities say they are seeking no other suspects, have announced no motive and are continuing the investigation. The killing occurred amid McKinsey and his wife Candice Jang’s divorce and custody dispute over their three children; both had sought domestic-violence protection orders, and court filings contain conflicting abuse allegations, including McKinsey’s claim that relatives targeted him over his transgender identity and Jang’s claim of physical abuse. McKinsey also faced misdemeanor child-abuse charges and had pleaded not guilty; investigators have not said whether the disputes or charges were connected to the shooting.
