Xi Visits Washington for Trump Summit

Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting Washington from Sept. 23 to 25 for a state visit and summit with President Donald Trump, his first U.S. visit since 2023. The leaders are expected to discuss trade, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, technology, Taiwan, agricultural purchases and broader strategic relations, with Trump planning a high-profile welcome and White House state dinner. Senior U.S. and Chinese officials held preparatory talks in New York that produced plans for a new AI dialogue, including notification of incidents posing national-security risks, and discussions on lowering tariffs for certain nonstrategic goods. The summit follows a fragile trade truce that reduced tariffs from their 2025 peaks but has not resolved disputes over minerals, technology, market access and China’s purchases of U.S. goods such as soybeans. Both sides have described reciprocal visits within six months as historically significant, but analysts and officials caution that the summit may manage tensions rather than settle them.
