Vanuatu Ferry Sinking Leaves One Dead, Dozens Missing

Rescuers in Indonesia are searching for 129 people still missing after the passenger ship Virgo Transport 8 capsized in the Java Sea in severe weather; 108 people were rescued and six died. Authorities deployed hundreds of personnel, ships and aircraft, but waves of up to three metres and strong winds hampered access to the partially submerged vessel. In Vanuatu, the inter-island ferry MV Matui sank between Santo and Ambae amid rough seas, leaving at least one person dead, 15 survivors and more than 30 people missing. Vanuatu officials are investigating possible negligence, including alleged overloading and failure to heed marine warnings, while critics say the search began more than 30 hours after the sinking. Separately, Greek authorities rescued 51 migrants after their boat partially sank south of Gavdos; about 25 people remained missing and one person was found unconscious.
