Hurricane Nolo Threatens Hawaii With Flooding
Hurricane Nolo is forecast to pass south of Hawaii’s main islands this weekend, with the Big Island facing possible hurricane conditions, dangerous surf and life-threatening flash flooding. Rainfall could reach 10 to 15 inches in many areas, with isolated totals up to 25 inches; Maui also faces heavy rain, flooding and tropical-storm-force winds. President Donald Trump approved a pre-landfall emergency declaration covering all four counties, authorizing federal assistance for protective measures at a 75% federal cost share. Authorities urged residents to follow official guidance and prepare to shelter or evacuate; schools and offices were closed, shelters opened, and Hawaiian Electric positioned crews and equipment for possible outages. Nolo is the third hurricane to threaten Hawaii in less than two months, as communities continue recovering from earlier storms and flooding.
