Flyers’ Zegras draws delay-of-game penalty for tucked jersey

Trevor Zegras received a two-minute minor for improperly wearing equipment at 9:51 of the second period in the Flyers' 2-0 preseason win over the Bruins on September 24, 2026. He started the shift with his jersey tucked into his pants and went to the box after a warning. Boston's power play did not score. Scouting The Refs said it was the first jersey-tuck penalty since 2013. "My jersey was tucked in at the start of my shift. So after a warning, they said that's an automatic penalty," Zegras said, adding he usually plays that way. Kris King said of the rule, "We just haven't called it." It has been on the books since 1964; during the 2013-14 crackdown Alex Ovechkin called it "kind of stupid." Elliotte Friedman said the league will warn players on neck guards, visors, and helmets and that jerseys are supposed to be untucked at the beginning of a shift. A second violation in the same game escalates to a misconduct. Flyers coach Rick Tocchet said, "He's just gotta put his tie down. That'll keep the jersey down." He added that Zegras cannot tuck it anymore and that when the regular season starts they cannot have a penalty like that. Teams were told a few weeks ago proper equipment use would be an officiating emphasis.
