Blue Jays Rookie Bateman Exits With Hip Injury After Sliding Catch

Toronto Blue Jays rookie center fielder Brett Bateman left Monday's game against the Baltimore Orioles after a sliding catch on a Rece Hinds line drive in the second inning. He stayed on the ground in apparent pain, Josh Smith signaled the dugout, and Bateman walked off slowly with help from manager John Schneider before Myles Straw replaced him. The club listed right hip discomfort; X-rays showed no fracture. Bateman, acquired from the Chicago Cubs in the Kevin Gausman trade, has hit roughly .320 with an OPS near .810 over 37-38 games since his Aug. 7, 2026 debut. Some accounts have him 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and three runs Monday. The Blue Jays sat three games behind the White Sox for the final AL wild-card spot while already missing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with back trouble, monitoring Dylan Cease's shoulder and limiting Trey Yesavage to two innings on return from knee inflammation. His availability for the rest of the season is unclear.
