Arizona Candidate Reports Rape While Repairing Sign
Bernadette Greene-Placentia, Democratic candidate challenging Rep. Abe Hamadeh in Arizona's 8th District, says she was struck from behind and raped around 2 a.m. on August 14, 2026, while repairing a campaign sign near 99th Avenue and Bell Road. She told Phoenix New Times she woke to a man sexually assaulting her; a second man tried to push her legs apart before she kicked him and he left. She drove home with fragmented memory, took three showers and a bath, told no one for days, and did not seek medical care or a forensic exam. She later reported vaginal bleeding, bruises, and a possible concussion. She told campaign staff two days later and her husband the next day, then reported the alleged assault to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office on August 31. Dave Moyer declined comment on the open investigation; no suspects have been identified. The district is rated solid Republican by the Cook Political Report. Daily Mail reported she described a political slur by an attacker; IBTimes UK said she was uncertain of the wording and that it does not establish political motive. Sen. Ruben Gallego said he was heartbroken and those responsible must be held accountable. Greene-Placentia said she needs women to know it is okay to talk about it.
