Wells Family Seeks Federal Review of Death
The FBI says it found no evidence of foul play in 18-year-old Nolan Wells’ death and will not open a federal investigation; a Mississippi grand jury also declined to bring charges, and state and independent autopsies left the cause and manner of death undetermined. Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July gathering on Horn Island and was found in the water two days later. His family disputes the conclusion that his death was consistent with drowning, citing unexplained head bruising and other findings, and continues to seek answers; members of Congress have urged a National Park Service investigation, and President Donald Trump said federal involvement is being considered. Three friends who were with Wells have filed defamation lawsuits against former NFL player Terrell Owens and social media creators over accusations that they killed Wells or tampered with his phone. The friends say the accusations, including Owens’ call for their arrest, have led to threats and harassment, and their lawyers say additional claims may follow.
