Ohio suspends gas tax statewide for 90 days
Ohio’s 90-day fuel-tax holiday began Oct. 4, suspending the state’s 38.5-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax and 47-cent diesel tax through Jan. 2, 2027. The law requires retailers to pass the tax reduction on to consumers, and the state estimates the average driver could save about $80 during the suspension. Drivers interviewed welcomed the lower prices, including people who rely on driving for work, though some said the savings do little to ease broader cost-of-living pressures. Supporters say the measure offers meaningful relief, but its precise effect at the pump is uncertain, and some of the savings may not reach consumers; the suspended taxes otherwise help fund roads and bridges. The measure passed as an emergency bill with bipartisan support, amid disagreement among Democrats over its rushed process and political motivations.
