A community-led fundraising drive succeeded in securing more than $10 million to purchase the 63-acre Moon Camp parcel on Big Bear Lake’s north shore, preventing a proposed 50-home development and protecting surrounding forest and shoreline habitat. A decisive late donation of $5.5 million from OpenAI co-founders Anna and Greg Brockman tipped the total past the goal, ensuring funds cover closing costs, taxes, and ongoing land stewardship. The land trust and Friends of Big Bear Valley will transfer ownership to the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust, which plans to preserve the land in perpetuity and allocate any excess toward ongoing care. The effort centers on protecting the habitat of the area’s famed bald eagles, Jackie and Shadow, who nest near the site and have become symbols of the local conservation campaign. The fundraising campaign, which drew broad local and global support and more than 25,000 contributions, follows earlier discussions of deadlines and the involvement of groups including FO BBV and the Ojai Raptor Center for eagle care. Greg and Anna Brockman expressed gratitude for the community’s support and highlighted the eagles’ role in inspiring perseverance and connectivity with nature.
