Leo Steinberg was an American art critic and art historian. Between 1961 and 1975 he taught at Hunter College of the City University of New York, and from 1975 until his retirement in 1991 he served as Benjamin Franklin Professor of the History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Steinberg made important contributions to the study of both twentieth-century art and the Italian Renaissance, and was described by The New York Times as "one of the most brilliant, influential and controversial art historians of the last half of the 20th century".
