Alexander Haig

Alexander Haig (19 January 1853 – 6 April 1924) was a Scottish physician, dietitian and vegetarianism activist. He was best known for pioneering the uric-acid free diet. Biography Haig was born at Rumbling Bridge, Perthshire, in Scotland. He was the son of George Andrew Haig of Bonnington and Maulesden, Brechin. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford. He took the M.R.C.S in 1879, graduated M.A. in 1880 and obtained his M.D. in 1888. He was elected F.R.C.P. in 1890. He was a physician in London from 1882. He was consulting physician to the Royal Waterloo Hospital for Children and Women and to the Metropolitan Hospital. Haig married his cousin Gertrude Mary Haig on 19 February 1878. He had one son and two daughters. His son was physician Kenneth G. Haig. Haig died in London on 6 April 1924, aged 71. He was buried in Edinburgh.
